Report on the State of the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences in South African Universities

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s (AWMF) involvement in South Africa began in 1988, as part of a ‘Special International Emphases’ initiative. The new Strategic Plan of the AWMF, released in late 2014, created an International Higher Education and Strategic Projects (IHESP) program. South Africa became a sub-program under the IHESP program.

The Report on the State of the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences in South African Universities was commissioned by the AWMF to enhance its understanding of arts, humanities, and social sciences disciplines and fields, and inform its thinking on grantmaking at South African universities.

This report provides an overview of the arts, humanities, and certain social sciences between 2000 and 2013, including undergraduate and postgraduate enrollment and graduation data and trends by field of study and discipline, and by ‘race’, gender, and nationality. It also offers a number of observations and recommendations related to the arts, humanities, and social sciences in South Africa.
