John C. Whitehead, 1922-2015

The Trustees and staff of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation mourn the passing of John C. Whitehead.  As chair of the Foundation's Board from 1990 to 1997, Mr. Whitehead contributed his deep knowledge and appreciation of the arts, humanities, and nonprofit governance to the Foundation's grantmaking.  In addition to guiding the Foundation's long-term commitments to the performing and visual arts, scholarly research, and diversity in the academy, Mr. Whitehead brought his broad experience in international and public affairs to bear upon the Foundation's efforts to help strengthen institutions of higher education in Eastern Europe and South Africa.  An advocate of building sustainable resources for future generations, Mr. Whitehead was also a strong and early supporter of the Foundation's efforts to create electronic archives of scholarly work in anticipation of the digital age.  We extend to his family our deepest condolences.
