"Essay on the Importance of Tracking PhD Career Paths"

In 2013, the Foundation awarded the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) a grant to support Understanding PhD Career Pathways for Program Improvement, a research initiative, also funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, on the feasibility of tracking the employment paths of PhD recipients.  Melanie Sinche, a senior research associate in the Labor and Worklife Program at Harvard Law School, reports on a conference and workshop sponsored by CGS that brought together graduate deans, researchers, funders, graduate students, and others to examine the data availability and needs for documenting PhD career outcomes.
