COVID-19 Response & Recovery

Countering the Fallout from the Pandemic

The arts and humanities help us navigate society’s challenges and guide us forward—and they matter now more than ever.

In 2020, as the world faced an unprecedented public health and economic crisis, the Mellon Foundation stepped up its total giving from $300 million to $500 million, supporting individual artists, fortifying arts organizations, and bolstering higher education, libraries, and archives with even greater urgency.

In 2021, Mellon will continue to distribute additional funds to help shore up struggling arts and cultural organizations and higher learning institutions, enabling them to continue their important work toward social justice and serving systemically underresourced communities.
