Internal Communications Manager: Job Description

Description and Scope

The Mellon Foundation's team of communications professionals are responsible for building and stewarding the Foundation brand and to tell its story, driving outreach and engagement efforts both internally and externally.  Our work strives to:

  • Build broad brand affinity and connection with The Mellon Foundation's work
  • Encourage appreciation, understanding of, and engagement with the work of our grantees
  • Broadly advocate for the centrality of the arts and humanities in culture

Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer, the Internal Communications Manager will be part of a growing team of communications professionals interested in producing and communicating meaningful, relevant, and impactful work at the Mellon Foundation.  The successful candidate will be a very hands-on communications strategist, motivated by the opportunity to partner with people at all levels of the Foundation and to steward our mission through our culture so that our employees are informed, engaged, and empowered to be successful working at Mellon.

The Internal Communications Manager serves as Communications' critical bridge between the Foundation's various departments and the rest of the Foundation.  Working closely with Human Resources, and other departments such as the President's immediate office, various operations functions, and Events, this role delivers key organizational information within the framework of the broader brand platform, always with specific Foundational goals in mind, and always building the Mellon Foundation's open and multivocal culture.

Precise, detail-oriented, and diplomatic, the successful candidate will translate organizational priorities into compelling internal multi-channel communications, driven by both Mellon's brand and our core mission of advancing social justice through the arts and the humanities.  The Internal Communications Manager is an exceptionally strong writer who is comfortable with transforming a range of subject matter—from workplace policy, HR benefits, onboarding and recruitment efforts, to internal events, announcements, and gatherings—into engaging communications that reach employees across the Foundation.

The Internal Communications Manager displays excellent judgement, fine-tuned storytelling instincts, understanding of the current landscape for content creation, and demonstrates through their work approach the importance of strong internal communications for driving awareness, alignment, and for fostering a spirited and inclusive staff culture.  Deep knowledge of best practices and new approaches around internal communications across platforms, and empathy for the staff experience and a history of working in cross-functional teams are critical to ensure coordination and maximum impact.

Duties and Responsibilities

50% Content strategy, development, and execution:  Works with units across the Foundation to develop content for emails, intranet, benefits, recruitment materials, annual open enrollment communications, internal events, and the Foundation-wide CMS system.  Support editorial calendar with internal communications support.  Under direction of the Chief Communications Officer, develop content that is on-message, on-brand, engaging and appropriate for each platform.  Offers counsel regarding best platforms for distribution of content to best engage and inspire staff.

30% Collaboration across the Foundation:  Diplomatically works across the Mellon Foundation, to develop and translate organizational communications goals and strategies into compelling content targeting and engaging staff.  Works proactively and cross-functionally across the organization to ensure alignment, including delivering content recommendations and finished communications products to Human Resources, Operations, Communications, Events, and President's Office teams.  Evaluate existing channels for appropriate internal communication.  Offer strategic counsel regarding new approaches to staff communications and identifies gaps and opportunities to improve processes.  Work directly with the volunteer Mellon employee engagement group (MEG) to support and highlight their offerings and efforts.

15% project management:  Develop strong relationships across Mellon to drive internal communications projects and priorities forward.  Stay current on latest trends and functionality for internal content development and culture-building communications.  Manage content within broader editorial calendar where appropriate.

5% Analysis and measurement:  Work with team to develop meaningful analytics, including the processes and tools to deliver metrics.

Required Skills and Experience

The successful candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree welcome
  • 5+ years of experience in internal communications, strategic communications, or related field, and a demonstrated commitment to culture-building in a mission-driven environment
  • Commitment to social justice and understanding of how social justice informs the Foundation's work in arts, culture and humanities
  • Exceptional ability to take internal content and deliver it to staff in a way that builds a strong, social justice-driven culture:  Understands how internal communications and organizational culture support broader communications goals
  • Understanding and experience with various CMSs (Mailchimp, AppSpace, WordPress a plus)
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills, including very strong editing skills. Experience and proven ability to work with other writers, designers, producers, and more
  • Project management acumen to quickly work with various stakeholders and manage multiple internal contributors
  • Experience in contributing to comprehensive communications and content plans.  Ability to coordinate well with others in carrying out those plans
  • Sound judgment:  Ability to provide well-reasoned, highly informed and strategic counsel to the department
  • Ability to quickly cultivate strong relationships within the Foundation
  • Reliable, trustworthy, and operates consistently with the utmost integrity. Can foster commitment, trust and teamwork within the department and beyond
