Digital Producer: Job Description

The Mellon Foundation ("Foundation") believes that the arts and humanities are where we express our complex humanity, and we believe that everyone deserves the beauty, transcendence, and freedom to be found there.  Through our grants, we seek to build just communities enriched by meaning and empowered by critical thinking, where ideas and imagination can thrive.  It makes grants in four core program areas (Higher Learning, Arts and Culture, Public Knowledge, and Humanities in Place).  The Foundation seeks a Digital Producer in the Communications department.

Summary

Reporting to the Integrated Content Director, the Digital Producer will be part of a growing communications team at Mellon Foundation, tasked with raising the visibility of the Foundation's mission, grantees, and story.

Mellon is reimagining and relaunching the Foundation's flagship website (www.mellon.org) as a digital manifestation of the Foundation's mission.  Mellon's external communications efforts seeks to both illustrate grantees' impact on social justice issues and invite visitors to engage with the world-changing power of the arts and humanities via Mellon's content.  The new Mellon site is in development and is expected to launch in spring 2023.  The Digital Producer will drive the continued evolution and growth of Mellon's new flagship website, the email channel, and other digital platforms, and will work with other members of the Communications team to conceive, develop, and execute top-flight digital projects.

Under the supervision of the Integrated Content Director, the Digital Producer is responsible for creating and maintaining innovative, visually dynamic, polished, and crisp digital storytelling using a mix of technical acumen, analytical insight, excellent editorial instincts, and digital design.  As a member of Mellon's internal Content and Creative teams, the Digital Producer is responsible for establishing effective web practices and user-centric content and working with developers and interaction designers to make Mellon's website a destination for vital storytelling about the fields in which the Foundation is invested.

Candidate must be an expert at developing, executing, testing, and evaluating cutting-edge content experiences for websites, email campaigns, and other digital platforms.  A hands-on role, this position manages copy, visuals, multimedia assets, and more, with precision, organization, shaping it for error-free pixel-perfect presentation.  This position can also be relied upon for clarity and perspective on best practices across platforms by the internal team and external partners.

Responsibilities

Planning and Digital Strategy (20%)
Work as a member of the internal Content and Creative teams to conceptualize, package, and publish content on Mellon's website.  Contribute to planning for long-lead content and features, advising on how they come together on the website, including conceiving of interactive features and new strategies to enhance site experience and comprehension of Mellon’s mission.  Collaborate on the editorial calendar for web publishing, including timely updates relating to news announcements and events.  Build, A/B test, send, and report on Mellon's email newsletter and enterprise to determine approaches for new email products that serve Mellon's goals for audience acquisition.

Content Management (60%)
Operate Mellon's website through posting of timely, curated content, ensuring all text and visuals are accurate and presented according to editorial and brand standards.  Working with Mellon's Contentful CMS, update website, create new templates, add tagging and metadata to content, and work with front-end developer as needed.  Identify and work to eliminate errors and act on opportunities for process improvement.  Maintain staging and production environments, administering a process that provides for departmental review of grant information for accuracy.  Work together with teammates on Mellon's internal Content and Creative teams to select and traffic visual and multimedia assets, assuring files are kept organized within the CMS and within the Digital Asset Management (DAM) system that houses Mellon's visual and multimedia library.  Serve as the final review before publishing content.  Field requests from across the Foundation to support other functional areas to keep their subject matter current, accurate, and impactful.

Web Development (10%)
Work closely with Mellon's internal IT team to maintain continuity across the platform to identify bugs and resolve issues as they may arise.  Collaborate as part of web development team that includes front-end developer (internal) and external consultants (including vendors, developers, and designers).  Assure website and other content meets WCAG 2.0 AA standards for accessibility; assist with researching new technologies and opportunities.  Take a data-driven approach to test features and improve new and existing content.

Field Study and Analysis and Measurement (10%)
Work with team to develop meaningful performance goals and to analyze opportunities for audience expansion.  Know Mellon's audiences and how they change over time.  Share examples from the digital landscape and evaluate new strategies to connect with readers across emerging platforms.  Use Google Analytics to track website data, analyze, and improve content performance. Provide reporting to key stakeholders.  Determine benchmarks and adjust tactics when necessary.

Qualifications

The successful candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in computer science, information technology, engineering, user experience, or related discipline with a focus on digital media or digital product management
  • At least five years digital media platform management experience; conceptualizing, defining, and/or delivering editorial content and content products to targeted audiences
  • Digital technology experience in either a Product or Strategy role
  • Proficiency with common analytics tools, including Google analytics; understanding of SEO
  • Demonstrated experience in a role collaborating with visual designers, developers, and writers, to update web properties.
  • Experience with Content Management Systems and metadata tagging/taxonomy; ability to update CMS and work with basic HTML; familiarity with web design and best practices in UI/UX
  • Knowledge of headless content management systems such as Contentful
  • Experience with multimedia asset management, including video and audio
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills. Experience and proven ability to work with writers, designers, producers, and more
  • Ability to quickly cultivate strong relationships within an organization

Preferred

  • Fluency in WCAG 2.0 AA standards for accessibility
  • Knowledge of headless content management systems such as Contentful
  • Knowledge of Digital Asset Management systems, such as Cortex
  • Deep knowledge of current landscape in arts, culture, and the humanities with demonstrated understanding of key organizations and influencers

Mellon Foundation is committed to providing compensation that is competitive and equitable within the philanthropic sector.  The estimated salary range for this role is $135,000–$150,000.  The amount of pay offered will be determined by a number of factors, including but not limited to qualifications, unique skills, credentials or experience that is expected to impact the candidate's contribution to the role.  We will also consider market data as well as the Foundation's internal pay equity framework.  Mellon offers a generous total reward package that provides base salary as well as a comprehensive benefits program.
