Content Writer and Multimedia Producer: Job Description

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation ("Foundation") is a not-for-profit, grantmaking organization that seeks to strengthen, promote, and, where necessary, defend the contributions of the humanities and the arts to human flourishing and to the well-being of diverse and democratic societies.  It makes grants in five core program areas (higher education and scholarship in the humanities; arts and cultural heritage; diversity; scholarly communications; and international higher education and strategic projects).  The Foundation seeks a Content Writer and Multimedia Producer reporting to the Director of Communications.

Position Details

The Content Writer and Multimedia Producer will play a key role in developing and managing content needs for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and ensuring that communications efforts across channels meet strategic goals.  The ideal candidate is an excellent, versatile writer with a notable passion for storytelling, influencing stakeholders and outcomes, and analyzing performance.  This role requires an ability to adapt to shifting priorities.  Experience with multimedia production and some editing is essential.  The Content Writer and Multimedia Producer will create content for multiple channels based on audience insight, desired outcome, and channel best practices.  These channels include (but are not limited to):

  • E-newsletters
  • Website
  • Presentations
  • Social Media
  • Printed Materials


The Content Writer and Multimedia Producer will:

  • Write and edit a wide variety of material—including research papers, case studies, newsletters, blogs posts, website content, social media content, presentations—for a diverse set of audiences
  • Develop concepts for short- and long-form multimedia pieces
  • Generate scripts, storyboards, and schematics based on initiatives
  • Manage multimedia production from start to finish, including some video editing
  • Edit text for style, consistency, clarity, and substance, adhering to Chicago Manual of Style, and serving as brand manager to ensure that content conforms to the Foundation's standards
  • Coordinate print and digital production schedules (including text, multimedia, infographics, photography, and launch timing across channels)
  • Assist Communications Specialist with ongoing website maintenance, social media, and email operations as needed
  • Perform optimization tasks, tracking, reporting, and sharing progress reports
  • Confidently articulate ideas to groups, large or small
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Experience

The successful candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree with progressive experience, preferably at a nonprofit
  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience planning and producing cross-channel digital communications strategies
  • Excellent conceptual and visual storytelling skills
  • Ability to work well within complex organizational structure and administrative systems; quickly grasp complicated subjects; pay acute attention to detail; relate to and successfully serve colleagues and audiences in diverse national and cultural contexts
  • Excellent editorial skills with a passion for quality writing and flair for storytelling
  • Experience producing great digital content, working video editing knowledge, and an understanding of online habits and the winning packaging of content for digital platforms
  • Demonstrated competency using technology including but not limited to Word, Excel, and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere, etc.)
  • Experience working in higher education or cultural organizations preferred
