Communications Temp: Job Description

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation ("Foundation") a non-profit organization that makes grants in five core program areas (higher education and scholarship in the humanities; arts and cultural heritage; diversity; scholarly communications; and international higher education and strategic projects) seeks a Communications Temp reporting to the Director of Communications.  The Communications Temp will participate in a temporary, full-time, minimum 3-month program supporting the communications department.  The Temp will provide a wide range of administrative, organizational, and research support.


  • Work independently and within a team on special, nonrecurring and ongoing projects
  • Production and publication of biweekly e-newsletter on Mail Chimp
  • Make weekly updates to the Foundation's website (Django CMS)
  • Monitor and post to the Foundation's various social media pages
  • Monitor web analytics and prepare metrics reports
  • Create images and prepare photos for publication by conducting photo research (archival and current collections), securing all necessary permissions, resizing images, and writing captions
  • Review press releases
  • Draft business correspondence, which may include letters, memos, speeches, and email
  • Maintain an organized system of tracking, monitoring, and prioritizing tasks and projects
  • Answer and/or field telephone calls and communications, and respond as appropriate
  • Handle confidential and non-routine information with sensitivity
  • Assist with research and compiling of reports
  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • Web-savvy communications professional with demonstrated ability to anticipate next steps, take initiative, exercise discretion, and apply sound judgment
  • Must be flexible, highly organized and have a proven ability to juggle multiple and competing tasks and demands and impeccable follow-up and attention to detail
  • High level of interpersonal skills and discretion to handle sensitive and confidential situations
  • Pay close attention to detail in composing, typing, and proofing materials
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Comfortable with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop skills are a must)
  • Experience with content management systems and back-end web development
  • Demonstrated experience with social media management and relevant tools, including Hootsuite and Google analytics
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to be highly productive working independently and as a member of a team
